How to Make a Gold Ring

If you have a lot of old gold jewelry or gold nuggets lying around your house, you can make a new gold ring out of them. Making a ring using scraps of gold is something you can do in your own home, whether you want to do this as a hobby or to start a business of making and selling hand-crafted jewelry. By using a few materials that are readily available in the market, you can create your own gold ring in just less than a day.
1. Design the ring by drawing the shape on a piece of paper. For example, you can create an engagement ring, a wedding band or ring. You may want to start with a simple design for your first time so that you do not have to deal with the intricate designs or decorations on a complicated design. Practice with one or two plain rings before you start adding more details. If you want to skip the design part and just use the ready-made ring mold or casting, you can skip to step 3.
2. Create a ring mold or casting based on your design. There are rubber or wax molds that you can use to create your ring mold or castings. Check on the resources below for a company that can do this for you. You can also buy ready-made ring molds, which means you would need not do step 1 since this mold would already be designed and ready to use.
3. Gather some gold. Collect scraps or broken pieces of old jewelry made of gold. You can also use gold nuggets or gold bar if you happen to have them in your possession. If you want to know how much in carat you will be creating, you can have your gold appraised with a jeweler before you start.
4. Place the gold in the ceramic crucible.
5. Wear your welding coverall, mask and gloves. These will protect you from the heat, sparks and flames which can cause injury.
6. Turn on the butane or acetylene torch.
7. Heat the crucible with the flame, carefully pointing the flame toward the gold until the gold materials are melted.
8. Pour the melted gold immediately into the ring mold or casting, then allow to cool.
9. Remove the ring from the mold once it cools down and solidifies.
10. Inspect the final product by looking through the ring hole, trying it on and looking at the surface.

When you cast an object such as a ring, you form it using a mold. Wax is used and the object to be made is fashioned in wax. The wax is coated with plaster and then the wax is removed through heating the mold, leaving a hollow form. In this case a gold ring will be cast when molten gold is poured into the hollow form. The gold is allowed to cool and solidify creating the ring.
1. Determine the size of the ring. Cut the width needed from the jeweler's ring wax tubing. Heat the ring mandrel by holding it over the flame of a torch. Place the ring on the mandrel and move it by turning it to the point of the correct size the ring is to be made. Remove the ring and flip it over so that the ring goes onto the mandrel in the opposite direction and again move it by twisting into position. This is done because the mandrel slopes and the flipping makes for a flat interior to the ring.
2. Draw the ring design on light weight tracing paper to make a pattern. Place the pattern on the wax. Use a pin and poke through the thin paper to make points which outline the design. Once you have the outlines you can then carve the wax using the artist knife.
3. Place the wax model on the sprue base. Use a drop of melted wax to set the sprue to the mold. Place this into the flask. Fill the flask with the plaster.
4. Heat the kiln. Place the flask into the kiln so that the wax will run out when heated. The result is a hollow mold of plaster. Leave in the kiln until the wax flow had finished. To eliminate possible trapped air tap the flask to release the last of the wax. Carefully remove the flask from the kiln and set aside to cool.
5. Light the torch and use equal amounts of the gases. Use the torch to heat the crucible until it is red hot. Coat the crucible with the flux, turning it while heating it with the torch. Place the gold into the crucible and add flux and heat until molten then add more flux. The melting temperature of Gold is 1945 ° Fahrenheit. Carefully pour into the plaster mold while maintaining the heat. Allow to cool.
6. Place flask into centrifugal casting machine which uses the spinning force to move the molten gold into the mold.
7. Carefully hammer the plaster to break it away from the ring.
